CARE works to fight poverty and achieve social justice.

We put women and girls in the center because we cannot overcome poverty until all people have equal rights and opportunities.

At CARE Nigeria, we work to save lives, defeat poverty, and achieve social justice. We seek a world of hope and tolerance.

Our 2024 results reaffirm CARE’s commitment to advancing locally led solutions that drive gender equality, strengthen community resilience, and create sustainable impact across Nigeria.

In 2024, CARE reached over 483,000 people in Nigeria with life-changing interventions through strategic partnerships with government agencies, development organizations, civil society, and the private sector.

Our Approach

Since its establishment, CARE Nigeria’s focus has been primarily on humanitarian response. Recognizing the protracted nature of the crisis in northern Nigeria and the fluidity of the context, CARE Nigeria is committed to building resilience and contributing to greater social cohesion, while carrying out lifesaving interventions through a humanitarian response.

Working effectively with a broad variety of stakeholders and understanding their interests and ways of working is essential for the delivery of our new strategy. Nigeria’s civil society is diverse but fragmented. Many organizations suffer from lack of financial sustainability and high staff turnover, although this is changing, and some have grown into critical implementing partners for donors.

We have developed a strong reputation for our gender expertise in Nigeria, particularly for promoting women’s leadership and preventing and responding to SGBV. We have also gained experience in providing adolescent-friendly SRHR services. Our new strategy aims to broaden and deepen our work impacting women and adolescent populations. This will require us to adopt and adapt methodologies that address gender barriers and discrimination simultaneously in our projects.

We seek to transition from a period in which we have faced significant challenges in developing evidence and reporting on critical program focus and quality data (PIIRS), as well as managing knowledge effectively. The strategic shift in our portfolio away from solely humanitarian activities, which tend to be evaluated less rigorously, shorter in nature, and prone to high staff turnover, will assist in this planned transition.

We have identified a set of CARE program approaches/methodologies that we want to adopt, adapt, or scale-up during the strategy cycle to strengthen the quality of our programs.
